Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park
Your adventure begins as a knowledgeable guide/driver picks you up after breakfast for the drive to Kibale National Park. Traverse the captivating Ugandan countryside, where the journey itself is a feast for the eyes, taking approximately 4 to 5 hours. Enjoy a delightful stopover in Fort Portal City for lunch, followed by a city tour.
Fort Portal, known for its picturesque landscapes and temperate climate, is often referred to as Uganda’s tourism city. Explore the palace of the King of Toro, gaining insight into the kingdom’s history, the current young ruler, and cultural traditions.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Swamp Exploration
Kick start your day with a quick cup of coffee before heading to Kibale National Park headquarters for a comprehensive briefing on chimpanzee tracking. Park wardens and guides will provide vital information on the activity and guidelines for your interaction with these remarkable primates.
Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is a unique experience as these agile creatures are known for their mobility and expressive group dynamics. The dominant chimp must maintain constant vigilance, contrasting with the charisma displayed by silver back among gorillas.
Your tracking adventure will last 3-5 hours, but you’ll have a precious hour in the presence of these playful chimps. Afterward, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, set out on a nature walk around the enchanting Bigodi Swamp, where you’ll spot more of the park’s 13 primate species and an array of bird life.
Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi National Park – Nature Walk and Leisure
After the excitement of tracking chimps and exploring the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, enjoy a leisurely morning. Savor breakfast at your own pace and prepare for the drive to Bwindi, starting around mid-day.
As you reach your hotel, check in, shower, and unwind within the hotel’s serene surroundings. Take a moment to relax with a refreshing drink and engage in delightful conversations with fellow travelers.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Visit tp Batwa Pygmies
This day begins with an early start, as you savor breakfast before being driven to the park offices for a comprehensive briefing on mountain gorilla trekking. The briefing commences at 7:00 am and covers the park’s history, gorilla groups, and forest inhabitants. Experienced rangers will also provide essential guidance on gorilla etiquette and what to bring.
Gorilla families are assigned based on group members’ fitness levels and ages. Some groups are located deep within the forest, requiring longer tracking times. If you have a preference for a particular group, inform your tour company in advance or discuss it during the briefing.
Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s impenetrable forest involves navigating thick vegetation, steep terrain, and occasional mud. Once you encounter your chosen gorilla family, seize the opportunity to capture incredible photographs and heed the rangers’ instructions. You’ll have one precious hour to observe these gentle giants.
After your magical hour with the gorillas, return to the starting point, where your guide will be waiting to escort you back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, visit the Batwa Pygmy community, gaining insights into their history and culture through traditional dance performances.
Day 5: Return to Kampala for Departure
Following the previous day’s thrilling activities, you have the luxury of a leisurely morning. Wake up at your own pace, savor a delightful breakfast, and await your driver’s arrival. Depart for Kampala, commencing the 8-hour journey using an alternative route.
This scenic drive passes through Mbarara town, providing ample opportunities for sightseeing. Make stops at the Igongo Cultural Centre, the equator crossing in Kayabwe, and visit the Buganda Royal drum makers as you approach Kampala.
Lunch can be enjoyed either at the Igongo Cultural Centre or at the equator crossing. Your driver will take you to the airport for your flight or to a hotel if you plan to extend your stay in Uganda.
